Sam, I'll forgive you for buying an iPad, but only because I really like you and Lady KimKim. Truth be told, I'd probably buy one too if I was rich and famous like you! :)

I once passed a man who was reading a newspaper while driving! And it wasn't even folded. I don't even know how he saw the road. Scary!

Also, I don't think eating a little marijuana ever hurt anyone. One time in college, my small dog got in to my roomate's weed stash and ate almost half an ounce. I called the vet, (imagine that conversation,) and he said she just needed to sleep it off. She didn't eat, walk or pee for 2 days, but she was eventually back to normal! I was very mad at the time, but it's kind of funny now. Apparently you can't overdose on weed.

Sam, have you seen 'Dead Snow' yet? If you like zombie flicks, it's well worth renting. It's fun in the same way 'Evil Dead' was.

Sam is right about "sweat shops". For the most part, the people working in them are working there because the alternative, working the farm/land, isn't as good. "Sweat shops" provide a place of work for people who otherwise wouldn't have one.

It might not be up to the workplace standards of the USA, but it's something. And I also believe if they are able to save enough wealth to immigrate to the USA to work, not take welfare obviously, they should be allowed to.

Hehe..at the very least, PLEASE make the steak and enjoy it yourself. Here's the process I used to make the best steak ever:

Grilled Steak Recipe with Garlic-Herb Butter

Steak Recipe Step 1: Buy a hunk of steak. I like mine 1.25 to 1.5 inches thick. Any cut of meat: Filet, Sirloin, Rib Eye, Porterhouse, T-Bone and NY Strip – they all work. You can do this with steaks less than 1″, just really watch your timing. If your steak is already superbly marbled – cut back on your timing! The fattier (more marbled) the meat is, the faster the salt works its way through the meat.

Steak Recipe Step 2: About 1/2 to 1-1/2 teaspoons of kosher/sea salt per side. Let it sit at room temperature during salting. You’ll begin to see water on the surface of the meat and on your plate. Don’t use anything other than kosher or sea salt, ok?

Here are guidelines….start with this and adjust salt + timing as you experiment.

MEAT	SALT/SIDE	TIME
Less than 1″	1/2 tsp each side	15 min
1″ thick cut – smallish girly-girl steak, about 4″ across	1/2 tsp each side	30 min
1.25″ -1.5″ (NY Strip, Ribeye) standard thicker steaks can sit longer to let the salt do its work throughout meat	3/4 – 1 tsp each side	45 min
1.25″ – 1.5″ manly-man T-Bone, Porterhouse – more surface area means you use more salt	1-2 tsp each side	45 min
>1.5″ Massive ginormous “Barney Rubble” porterhouse – our fav. I get the strip side, husband gets the filet side	1-2 tsp each side	1 hr or more
Step 3: Rinse all salt off, pat very dry <- that part is important. Season with fresh ground pepper (no more salt is needed). Grill to your liking. Hint: get yourself a grilling thermometer. Top with Garlic-Herb Butter immediately to let it oooooze and aaaahhze all over the steak.

Garlic-Herb Butter Recipe

1 stick of unsalted butter, softened (not melted, just softened)
handful of fresh herbs (any combination is fine. My fav is basil and parsley)
1-3 cloves of garlic, smushed in garlic press

To make the Garlic-Herb Butter, combine all ingredients. Lay out a sheet of plastic wrap. Spoon butter mixture on wrap. Roll and shape butter into a log. Refrigerate to firm up for 30 minutes. Slice into 1/4” disks to top the grilled steaks. You can make butter up to 3 days in advance. Make sure you use unsalted butter – the steak is seasoned perfectly already.

Where's the steak instructions? I've got to get ready for March 14!

haha Not really...the hubs did not get me so much as a card for Valentine's Day so he's missing out this year. But I would like to learn how to cook a good steak. And I'm anxiously awaiting "Letters to the Modern Bride"! Write it!

I had a job once where people were constantly undoing what I had just done. Victoria's Secret: I would spend 3 hours meticulously folding a table of undies, sorting them by style, color, and size, and some jerkoff would come along and mess them all up in about 30 seconds. Drove me nuts!!

Maybe the real reason Kevin Smith got kicked off the plane wasn't because he was too fat, but because they saw "Jersey Girl", and wanted revenge?

It breaks my heart that someone knocked over your snowman twice. UGH!

I read Sam's Twitter post about the Facebook dummies...that was hilarious!

Also, put it on the record that in this episode Sam said, "I'm just glad that I live in Texas." No take backs! :)

Sooo I hate to even bring this up...(Kim-don't kill me!) but I can't believe that Sam doesn't know about March 14?!? There is in fact a holiday for men-their answer to Valentine's Day. The thing is-in order for it to be celebrated, the man has to come through on Valentine's Day. Details here- www.steakandbjday.com NSFW! (obviously)

Some movie theaters here are too loud for me, and I'm half deaf from loud music for 20+ years. I think the theaters crank up the volume to drown out the stupid kids in the audience who talk during the movie. Also stop turning on your cell during the movie - I don't care how quiet you are, the stupid lightup screen is just as friggin annoying when you're trying to watch the movie. Hey kids, you are not important for two hours. Shut the thing off. You will survive, you are not a doctor on call.

Nitro and motorcycles not a good combo. My wife went to school with a guy who decided to do this a year after graduation. They scraped him up for two blocks. Also I took a course on Human Sexuality in college and I kid you not a 1/3 of the class was on Bonobos and how they like the sex. They would reach out and grab each others genitals instead of shaking hand or fist bumping.

I can shed a little light on Texas gun laws. My husband has a concealed handgun license in Texas! Yeehaw.

To carry a concealed handgun, you must have a license. (Take a course, pass an exam, register with the DPS.) Even with the license, you cannot carry your gun just anywhere. A lot of places post signs that say you cannot conceal a weapon on their premises. Lame.

For other guns, (anything other than handgun,) you cannot conceal them ever. You can have them in your car, but only if they are out of your reach.

You can't legally point a gun at someone unless they are threatening your immediate safety. Even then, you aren't supposed to just shoot-you are supposed to warn them you have a gun and will use force to protect yourself, and give them a chance to leave you alone. (Of course...if you shoot someone it would probably be hard to prove if you warned them or not...)

Lame.

Sorry I don't listen to your shows as promptly as I would like, but your listeners that also happen to be teachers, AS WELL as parents, will be only too ready to tell you that Report card time truly blows goats. Not only am I not able to spend time listening to the good things in life (your podcast, for example), but I'm struggling to spend more time with my 5 year old son, so he doesn't become a mass murdering rapist.

Anyhow, listening to episode 509, and I heard how Thing Three's teacher popped a gasket. I CAN'T BLAME HER.

People seem to forget that Teachers are human (unlike other professions like Lawyers and Doctors), and that they are also the LOWEST paid of the postgrad professions.

Teachers don't have ONE master. . . They have MANY masters. Teachers have to answer to their most important clients (kids). They have to answer to guilt-ridden and/or stupid parents (whose ONLY qualification to come in to your workplace and tell you how you know NOTHING about your job) is that their birth control failed. Teachers also answer to principals and vice principals, who are on a back-stabbing journey to the top, and will think NOTHING of taking down a teacher or two with them,
Teachers also answer to Trustees, who are only in the school board as a political stepping stone to whatever payola-ridden and power hungry objective they are weaseling toward.

In other words, I wouldn't have been too amazed to see Thing Three's teacher go TOTALLY postal. Besides, the mini-breakdown SHE had wouldn't have even raised an eyeball 25 years ago, when we were sitting in the classrooms. At least she didn't go postal.

Most people give no thought to how shitty it is to teach some peoples kids.

Sorry about the rant, love the podcast.

I don't know why the emailer got upset over Kim saying "Oh snap", that's ridiculous. She says "I'm just sayin'" a WHOLE lot more, as justification for her points. It's like me, as I tend to add 'in my opinion' and 'basically' a lot more than I need to. Sam we've just given up as he'll say anything, politically correct and rude or not. Unfortunately Kim, we hold you to the higher standard, as Sam said. We guys die at a younger age though, so that makes it fair.

Mark Mcgwire never said he didn't take steroids. He just avoided the question especially when congress was looking for a scapegoat. I don't blame him. Baseball was very happy to take the profits. BTW, it wasn't against the rules and I'm not even sure it was illegal at the time.

I bet she gets points off on the moon assignment for not drawing it the way her textbooks say it SHOULD look, even though what she actually saw was nothing. The teacher probably didn't even really look outside. I had a similar assignment in college Astromony..."draw what you see in the telescope". An art student, I drew exactly what I saw, yet I got points off because Saturn didn't look like some goofy cartoon planet with huge thick rings. It wasn't THAT good of a telescope! ha!

I agree with everything Sam said about Lost. There are so many loose ends to answer, I don't see how they can do so without it turning completely silly at some point. But in addition to the non-BS characters, I'd add Desmond - he's pretty much been a solid character, even around that goofy 'constant' storyline they did.

For giant people, 'Village of the Giants' is the best movie. You've got Ron Howard, Beau Bridges, and Tommy Kirk. Wackiness ensues. There's also a great scene of Johnny Crawford (Lucas McCain's boy) dangling between one of the giant gal's boobs (might be the scene Kim was talking about.) It's in my top ten favorite MST3k episodes.

Are you kidding me? That cop should be punished for detaining someone (which is what they do when they pull someone over) because he wanted to see his bike.

The moment I knew I wasn't being held for breaking the law, I would have gotten the cop's business card and driven off.

I think that since it is now your 20th anniversary, you should take a second honeymoon, and maybe even renew your vows so Kim can have pictures! We just got married and honeymooned at a Sandals resort in St. Lucia, and although the resort was a little corny, it's affordable, they really pamper you, and it is great if you just want to lay around in the sun and eat and drink all you want. DO IT! You deserve it!

New website poll. Who here would pay $15 extra dollars for shipping in plain box? You've got to pay for the box, packing materials, and someone to pack it. Not me.

Got $20,000 for solar panels? (so i've heard)

I had to finally purchase an LCD tv as my old analog decided color was no longer necessary (black and white is quaint but not for all shows.) Ordered online, it came to me just in the manufacturer's box with a couple of mailing labels slapped on it. No brown wrapping or box! Thankfully I was home when it was delivered. Plus I don't need Joe Shmo at UPS who wants to see if he can put a nice crack in my screen just because he's having a bad day at work.

There is plenty of reminding to walk in the hallways..you wouldn't want anyone to be running with a sharp pencil now, would you? Hehe
At least at our school, the kids do crossing guard duties so the kidlets don't run out in front of cars. As far as any training beyond that..there is no CPR or tactical training etc...but I certainly wouldn't be looking to a 10 year old for any serious protection should the need present itself.

What exactly does a Safety Patrol do to keep people safe? I remember them from my elementary school, and the extent of their duties was telling me not to run on the sidewalk.

I'm not sure they have the training or physical ability to keep anyone safe should a situation arise.

I have to imagine the whole world pretty much laughs at our legal system and how easy it is to manipulate. Whoever set the precedent that interaction with terrorists falls under a legal definition rather than a military one made a HUGE blunder and gave terrorists a big leg up in the world. Way to go, lawyers and congresspeople. I'm pretty damn sure NO military person would ever think that was a good idea. But they are only the ones who have to protect us, so of course don't listen to their opinion on it. You congresspeople have a really tough job - talking to people for a living and writing things down. OOOOOOOOH - that takes intelligence. Some jobs do (engineers, teachers, code people) - yours not so much. Go into work, pander to people, make promises to get votes to keep you in office, once in office backslide on promises and find more people to pander to. NONE of you have firm stances on anything if it jeopardizes your status in office.

I say let the 3- and 4-wheelers go where they want to. People nowadays are making things far too safe for the stupid people - Darwinism needs to occur, people. Gee I wonder why the planet's becoming overpopulated? We keep making things too safe. Allow the herds to thin.

And I think dodgeball needs to be mandatory in school. We're raising wussie kids nowadays, kids need to be toughened up and not catered to.

SCIENCE!!! hahahaha. Amen on the PC gaming rant, I can't afford a PS/Xbox/whatever so rely on my PC, which yeah I can't afford to upgrade yearly as the game designers demand. So I'm always 2-3 years behind on popular games. I did Halo about 6 months ago. Dragon Age? Mmmmm probably get to that in 2014 or so.

Great show K & S. I think you are right on the Sam's Club theory, the membership fee keeps out a lot of the riff raff. I don't buy the 50 rolls of TP, but I DO buy the industrial size of sliced pickles and jalapenos ($2.50 for a Vlasic 16 oz jar, $3.48 for a Vlasic 80 oz industrial size jar.) I wish all the soup varieties came in industrial sizes, I'd probably buy them too.

I thought you guys were right on with the health care comments. For some reason, the crazy republicans are coming out of the wood-work. Too many people are drinking the Glenn Beck kool aid.
The economy has changed. This is no longer my grandfathers "work my whole life and get a pension" economy. Greed has destroyed that forever.

Put yourself in the position of owning a small business. Your employee accidentally lists your $100 products for $1.00 online. You get 3500 orders. You should have to pay for this?

There's a difference between shady marketing and actual mistakes. Listed prices are not a contract, they are an offer. So long as the company refunds all the money, it should have no obligation to deliver what you wanted to buy.

The tv personality crossing over phenomenon to different shows bothers me as well. I can't take anyone on the Today show seriously as a newsperson when I see they also host Big Brother, or Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Somehow I just don't see Walter Cronkite hosting Family Feud or Wipeout in his day, you know? He took that job seriously. And friggin Katie Couric I just can't take seriously at all. News is not about being perky. You lost all credibility with me when that became what you are known for. Perky is for daytime tv cooking show hosts (hello Rachel Ray.)

A grown up man who doesn't know how a girl's crotch look like. Laughable. And you even call it a vagina. Don't you know you'll find the vagina inside a girl or a woman. What kind of a man are you?

You assme this shot was there just to chock you. Didn't you consider this shot had something to say to you? What we saw was a horisontal scar. A scar. Because this vampire has been mutilated.

So, if you see a horisontal scar and not a girl's gender, what can it be? Twice Eli said to Oskar that she wasn't a girl. Well, actually Eli is a boy. A castrated boy. But that isn't important. The important thing is that Eli is a creature, a vampire, probably without a definitive gender.

Ha. And the rest you didn't get. Do you have anything betwen your ears? You're hilarious. Amateur!!

Great show guys. I ran into your 'Land of the Lost' issue when I went back and watched a lot of episodes of 'Lost in Space'. I thought it was the greatest thing in the world when I was a kid - thought the Jupiter 2 was just friggin fantastic as a spaceship, thought Judy was just friggin HOT, and some of the monsters were just terrifying (the giant orange headed guy with the twisted face friggin gave me nightmares.) Looking back now...umm wow, pretty darn cheesy. Dr Smith is still good doing his campy thing, and well Judy was just HOT, but the monsters. Ya gotta love the episode where Penny rebels with the hippies and just loves to dance up on a table (quite normal for then, quite stripperlike for now.) Guess we just can't go back and watch em now.

Sounds like the right choice to me. If that's the worst thing you've done in a while, you're in good shape.

And congrats on having a 17 yr old that can come to her parents over birth control, no matter the reason. Keep it that way before you have pregnant girls on your hands. Good luck.

Sesame Street just cracks me up. Instead of seriously tackling a problem like AIDs in Africa by I dunno, getting people to stop copulating like crazy and practice responsible birth control with condoms (now there's a Bert and Ernie skit that would be entertaining), INSTEAD we are going to mindblow American kids with muppet propaganda insisting and instilling that whatever the rest of the planet does is just absolutely fine and we MUST learn to accept and tolerate it as okay and reasonable. Mmm hmm. I am just waiting for the muppet episode that somehow defends stoning and honor killing as reasonable behavior because a religious interpretation dictates it is valid and a sacred belief. You know what my sacred belief is? Stop physically and mentally controlling your people and teach them to THINK so they can make their own decisions rather than having some daddy figure tell them how to live.

Great show guys, you made me add Cricket in Times Square to my Netflix que. I barely remember it from years ago.

I never got the sleeveless look either - I see that and I just think Larry the Cable Guy. I'm a hairy guy, I don't even like hitting the pool when its crowded (imagine a gorilla in the zoo pool, that's a pretty accurate picture.) But if I am dying and its too hot, I wear a friggin tank top - that looks more normal than the sleeveless thing.

www.downsizedc.org has been pushing for years for what they call the "read the bills act." Meaning every voting congressperson has to read the bills they vote on.

Sam is right. The federal government people have lost their minds and are out of control.

Been a listener for a while.

This is just another example of the unexpected consequences that occur EVERY SINGLE TIME government does something. People get hurt. That is the effect you'll have if you run an organization backed by nothing but threats of violence.

I hope all goes well with Kim's business, but if the government continues on this path, they're going to get us all soon. Just keep in mind; if you want your freedoms, you have to be willing to grant others their's.

I actually like finding the people who are talking on their headsets at the grocery store or Walmart. I listen in and respond to their conversations as much as possible. Makes me feel sociable and generally just irritates them no end.

What I don't get is thumpers - these bozos with the car stereos with the woofers that rattle cars around them. Nobody listens to their music that loud, and if you are, you'll be deaf by the time you're 30. I like to get in front of these guys and fiddlefart slowly along. Oooh they hate it when you wave friendly at them.

There's a lot of smokers out here in Ft Wayne I've discovered. It makes me real nostalgic - growing up, my father actually smoked a pipe. Pipe tobacco just smells great and takes me right back to childhood. If I didn't have to do it outside, I'd smoke a pipe here at the apartment. IF I could find a pipe shop in town.

Great show guys! I miss having kids this time of year, the going to have pics taken with Santa sounds like fun.

On the Kim cussing topic, I think we just don't want Kim to have to censor herself because we want the real Kim. And I do get Sam's point - a gal who tosses f bombs right and left does seem like a sailor-slut, but I don't think Kim would do that. Kim probably uses the nicer cuss words, not the gooshy gross ones.

I think it's okay if Kim curses more. I think she's just trying to keep up with you, Sam. And, it's got nothing to do with being a lady. It's all about being a pissed off lady. :)

'Rosie Live' has officially been canceled, hurrah!!

Okay, gay people need to realize something - we are allowed to NOT like you and not be afraid of you. I don't like hedgehogs. I'm not afraid of them, I just don't like them. I don't like gals with short hair, I'm not afraid of them. I can't stand it when gays play the 'you're afraid of us' card. It's bull. People have been hating people LONG before being gay was an issue. You're not special. Stop hiding behind a facet of your person.

Oh that's STUPIDfast! My red sweater took me like 5 months to finish.

Of course I keep getting distracted with other projects, like knitting a hat for The Man. But I've dedicated myself to finishing this green sweater by the end of the month, no matter what.

And then, if I get time, maybe I'll manage to knit some RWTY hats and ship them off to Podcast Land for my favorite podcasters! No promises on that part, though.

Good show guys! You know the McDonalds thing is weird. Certain of their shit I crave occasionally (Big Mac of all things - no fries or anything, just the Big Mac by itself), but yeah the other stuff makes me feel ooky. No idea why.

On the bridge jumpers, I'd set up a shooting range and charge people to shoot at the jumpers as they fall. Fun (how good a shot are you?), educational (physics at work - see how a bullet outraces gravity), and fiscally beneficial (the $$ raised goes towards bridge funds.) The jumpers are going to die anyways, so what do they care?

Okay Sam, you need to start a list of the most offensive word combinations. So far on the list:

1. Stump fuckers (hadn't heard that one before, bravo)
2. Plunger rape (thank you Jim Rome)

Hey Guys,

I feel your pain. My daughter's elementary school does the PTA meeting thing to us every year at the spring show. It is such a rip off. i actually booed last year when they started announcing the officers for the next year, except for my neighbor, and after my wife elbowed me. Even the kids let out a gasp of dismay when the parents started taking over. Most of the parents in attendance are not members of the PTA but they held us captive in the elementary school cafetorium sitting in kid chairs with younger and older siblings screaming throuhgout. UGHHH!!!

Well said, Sam. Life is full of hard lessons, and to shelter kids from absolutely anything remotely negative (dunking) just makes life that much tougher when they hit the real world. Someone getting a promotion over you at work is office dunking, in my opinion.

Nice suck up job Sam, what did you do? :-)

But really, you and Kim ( from what I can tell listening to the show) are truly a match made in heaven (or a one horse town in nowhere land). You both have great values and common sense, something that is not so common anymore. I am really glad that you guys decided to share that by podcasting. Besides if Kim did not have you she would have to learn the podcasting equipment on her own.

I've only just caught up with everything after being away on holiday for a while. What can I say? This is one of my worst nightmares...especially as it's the exact same thing that I did when I was seventeen (except it was a tree that i ran into - and my parents didn't havee to buy a new one!). From what I remember, it took my parents far longer to recover than it did me...bruises and bumps heal pretty quickly but my parents' worries did not.

She's learned a valuable lesson, albeit the hard way...and I'm sure that once school starts with the return to routine and all the mini-dramas that accompany the school year, things will get easier and start to feel a little more 'normal'.

take care x

Thanks so much for all of your kind words. It really has been a trying time, but things seem to be slowly getting back to normal.

And by normal, I mean we only have to worry about the kids killing each other, someone getting bitten by a spider, and/or a minor revolt amongst the children.

This is true - there's nothing worse as a teen than doing something you're not supposed to be doing, with someone you're not supposed to be with, where you're not supposed to be is the all-time teen trifecta of bad.

On the other hand, I was a perfect child and never did such a thing. Honest. Mostly.

While pee may be sterile, it's still pee. And if I pick up a bottle of piss while going down the road, I'm going to be so unhappy.

And how would you get MRSA in your lungs? Now I'm curious.

Yeah, we only carry the pictures that show some injury or other disgusting bit. Then when people ask us about our kids, we just say, "LOOK! This could happen to you."

We find it cuts down on the number of people asking us about our kids. Really, you don't want to hear about them, and we don't want to then listen to tales about your disgusting little monkeymen.

Sam, I've been so crazy with getting back to work and setting up for the new school year that it wasn't until now that I heard the episode about Thing 1. You & Kim are in my prayers as I know that even when physically she no longer bears any scares, emotionally you will all have to start healing fom the pain of being lied to.

I am glad that this hard lesson only cost her discomfort and not her life. Hang in there guys! You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Actually, pee is sterile, unless you have a bladder infection - so the worst part really is the disgusted WTF factor :-P

MRSA, OTOH, is a horrible thing - I deal with it at work on a daily basis. just imagine what it does to your lungs if it makes skin look like that :o !

The pictures of your kids on the site -- do you carry these in your wallet, too?

Just wondering.

Also, I think Sam is right -- new pee is more likely to be less bacteria ridden than a bottle of pee that has been sitting in the hot sun. Frankly, the automakers should make, for a nominal fee, a pee seat that has a receptacle for the penis which diverts the urine discretely on to the road to dry quickly in the hot Texas sun -- or melt the snow on the cold Ohio roads. Save gas. Save salt. Save time. I'm not sure what the gals will do, though -- maybe a diva seat.

Awww, hugs. I do understand 100% all those feelings. However, a) they're kids, and b) they're girls. There is no amount of parenting / lectures / love that will keep your teenage girl(s) from getting sneaky & doing things they aren't supposed to do. Take it from a Former Teen Girl. And here's hoping that this was her wake-up call, that turns her around and gives her incentive to keep herself on the fairly-straight-and-narrow. Sigh.

Lots of love & hugs, one parent to two others.

And next time, CALL ME. :)

Sam,
Yep what your daughter did SUCKED!!!!!! big time. And you have a right to be hurt and pissed at her crappy behavior. But hopefully she will learn from this and how this action will impact her freedoms for the foreseeable future ( like until 18 sounds good). But don't let this one stupid act color your view of your daughter forever. You have great kids we can tell that by how you talk about them. And what teenager doesn't do something totally stupid that they regret for most of their lives, yours is just lucky enough to have the chance to make it up to you and your wife, some don't . So while I do believe you need to really make her life crappy for a while, give her a chance to rebuild that trust with you. Don't totally shut her out because of your hurt.

Good Luck with this

ToadyJoe...Thanks for the vote and the juice attempt! We appreciate them both.
You can juice our shows by using the "juice it" links in the episode notes on our site or by going directly to Blubrry. The search feature is twitchy but you can find us by clicking on the Shows tab and then choose the General category. We are usually on the first page because we are soooo awesome!
Oh..and we luuuurrrve you, too!

Hmmm "brain melt"?

Works for me.

BTW: careful of the road-hog mouth pumpins' -- ya don't want the skid marks ON your new bike. Carry paper towels.

The gas cash thing was done in the Tampa area too. It turned out to be a publicity stunt by a radio show. It got on the local news, so I guess it worked.

The Ruins wasn't all that good. It's not horrible and has it's share of gore, but just didn't scare me. I was really hoping that The Strangers would scare me. I do have to say I just saw Planet Terror from the Grindhouse movie and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it, but again not scared. My husband says it's because I am getting older and therefore not as easily scared.

I did read the blog about the movie. I guess screaming teens at the movies is unavoidable no matter where you live, eh?
I really love a good scary movie too and they are harder and harder to come by. Makes me sad. We have not seen The Ruins..might have to put that on our Blockbuster subscription list!

Hey Kim did you read my blogpost on the strangers? We had the screaming youngin's ourselves. Drove me nuts! They wouldn't shut up through the entire movie.

I kind of like the movie, but was so hoping for something really, really scary. I haven't seen a good scary movie in a long time. Have you guys seen The Ruins?

Honestly it is a combination of the wacky news and how you and Kim talk about it. So chill dud, if the podcast was missing either of you it would not be as good.

Hey I have something worse than a person with little kids trying to give you advice about your teenagers ( I agree with you by the way). Try a person with NO KIDS telling you what your doing wrong and being offended when I told her she had no clue. Her response " I have babysat my nieces and nephews", yeah right! Give me a break!

Hi Taryn! Welcome to the show. I'm glad you are enjoying it.
I have several suggestions on the sewing lessons. If your husband purchased it at a machine dealer, they often have classes that range from beginner to advanced. Local fabric stores, such as Joanns or HancockFabrics will also often conduct classes.
Because you specifically inquired about online sources, check out www.patternreview.com. They have lots of information and virtual classrooms to enjoy. I would also recommend getting a good book to keep by your side. I've been sewing for many years and still defer to reference materials now and then. Borrow some from the library before you make your permanent selection and then check out Half.com or Sortfloorbooks to get them for less than retail.
There is no better teacher than experience. Read your manual and then start with something simple, like a pillow. Don't be afraid! Enjoy the process and know that you will make mistakes. Once you complete your first successful project, there will be no stopping you!
If you need more help, email me. ..and don't forget to share your work on the Horde!

You did a great job!! Crafty lady.

Random question - my husband bought me a sewing machine - but I don't know how to use it and have been trying to find a place on line to teach myself...any suggestions?
(By the way - I absolutely love the show!)

Thanks for the compliment, Sona! I make costumes for the girls, too but mostly make little girl dresses and sets to sell. I would love to see photos of your creations if you'd care to share. You can post them on the Horde. I've made a few quilts myself and also love the idea behind using up scraps. Waste not, want not eh?

Your stuff looks great, Kim. Keep up the good work. I sew also and don't have the natural born talent that you have. I make costumes the best. Princess Jasmine (from Aladdin) and a Lord of the Rings Wedding dress are the things that I prided my self on until I got into the quiting thing. I really love that. Scraps into beauty.

I will say that I believe that everything that guys do is motivated almost solely by trying to get some. Doesn't matter if you're married or not. So, just insert the line, "So, can I get some?" after everything your husband says.

"Honey, don't worry, I finished the dishes for you!"

"Changed that light bulb in the bathroom."

"Got the kids ready for bed."

"Wanna start a podcast?"

I hear ya! Believe me I do! But I reiterate: I have NEVER met a child that does not want to learn the language. They don't want to be different. They want to be able to communicate with their peers. They want to be able to go to the latest movie with their friends and not need an interpreter. I just have never encountered this, and I have been teaching ELL students for a looooooooong time now.

However, I do believe that much of what you say does apply to adults. Here in Miami, where there is more Spanish rather than English being spoken, you see adults that put forth no effort whatsoever. They don’t have to. Everything form store signs to store employees all speak Spanish. Unlike the children, who are surrounded by English speaking peers and who so desperately want to fit in, they create their own little “Spanish” world. They work with Spanish speakers, their friends are all immigrants as well, they watch Spanish soaps all day, etc…

This is not the case with kids. You really have to believe this. I see kids get made fun of because they can’t speak English, or because they have an accent. I have students that want to stay after class to speak English to me and when I ask them “why me?” they respond “because you don’t laugh at me.” They are desperate to learn and they usually do. On the rare occasion that a child is in the ELL program longer than is usually expected, we later come to find that the child has a learning disability that the whole time was being attributed to a lack of language acquisition. So, the child had not learned because he was a “hoo-tard” (God I love that word!) and not because he wanted to coast through school speaking Spanish (ha-ha)

Are students really “forced” to take Spanish in Texas? Now, that I have a huge problem with. I think it’s great that it is being offered, especially with our huge influx of Hispanic immigrants. However, I never agree with a student being “forced” to take something that is not included in their core curriculum.

Keep up the great work!

Hey TC -
We really appreciate the thought you put into your email and we took it in the spirit intended. The short version of our response is that we don't have any problem with bilingual classes, or with kids being able to choose to learn Spanish, French, or whatever other language they want to learn.

Our issue is that the local schools have made it possible, and even very easy, for Spanish-speaking students to make it through their entire school career and never have to learn English. Related to this, some of the schools have made it mandatory for English speakers to learn Spanish in order to be able to communicate with their Spanish-speaking peers.

That's not good, in any way. It's not good for the English-speaking students who have to communicate in the language of another country. It's also not good for the Spanish-speaking students who have no incentive, and therefore little desire, to learn to speak a language that will enable them to better pursue their dreams in America.

While it's true that Kim and I aren't in the school as teachers, we are heavily involved in the day-to-day activities in the school system and have seen, firsthand, the damage that excessive coddling of non-English speaking students can cause to all concerned.

Having what amounts to two curricula and two sets of textbooks is taxing on school districts that are already so strapped for cash they can't afford paper and pencils for the teachers. Allowing that to continue from Kindergarten through high school is a crippling expense.

While your points about what it is like to be a non-native speaker are well-taken, it's also important to realize that there MUST be an incentive to learn the language, and this is currently not the case, at least in your area.

It sounds like we have two really different situations. In your area, you’re exposed to a lot of kids who want to learn English, and the school system is doing a good job in promoting this skill’s importance to the community. We envy this, because the same is not true in our area.

Here, from what we can see, the opposite is true. The schools don’t really care if the kids learn English. In fact, the dirty little secret around here is that ESL (English as a Second Language) kids are worth proportionately more to schools than English-speaking students, thanks to the way that tax dollars are apportioned.

As a result, the community doesn’t really see the need to promote English as a language to learn – if you could get all the way through school in your native language, would you really stretch yourself to learn a second language? As you so rightly point out, these kids don’t necessarily have a lot of extra time and the tools to make this sort of scholarship easy for them.

Again, we really do appreciate your comments and heartily agree with you that teaching English to those who do not speak it should be a very big priority in school. We just don't think it should continue as a viable secondary instruction track throughout the entire school career.

I’m pretty disappointed on your take regarding children learning Spanish in schools. While you crack me up 99% of the time, this is the 1% in which I was not laughing.

Had you been referring to only adult immigrants coming to this country and refusing to learn English, I would have totally understood and agreed. However, you made references to immigrant children not wanting to learn English and the fact that they are in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes for way to long. With all due respect, you are not in the classroom and therefore, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

These children are eager and actually DESPERATE to learn the language. However, not all students learn at the same pace. They also do not have the resources at home. They have non-English speaking parents that although we would love for them to all magically learn English overnight, the reality is that language acquisition takes time. Imagine moving to China. That’s all. Just IMAGINE moving to China right now and people becoming angry because Thing 3 has been in Chinese language classes for way too long and she should know Chinese by now! Then imagine Thing 3 being accused of not wanting to learn the language because of course, there’s nothing a child loves more than being totally different from everyone else and not fitting in. Yeah, kids love being the odd man out at school. They love being in special classes because they can’t keep up…. It’s AWESOME! Add to this the fact that both you and Kim are working to makes ends meet and don’t have the language skills as of yet to help her at home. It’s not easy guys and as a teacher, I see the struggles these people go through everyday. I see children cringe when asked to speak in English because they are ashamed of their accent. They didn’t ask to come to this country; it was their parents choice and they are adjusting as best they can.

Oh, and I would LOVE for all the paperwork sent home with important information to be in Chinese, despite the fact that in my little hypothetical scenario, half the population in China are American immigrants! How fun and fair for you!

Now, on the other hand, I agree that it is ridiculous when people have been in this country for years and years and don’t speak a lick of English. I don’t agree with that and yes, it infuriates me. It infuriates me to the point that although I am a fluent Spanish speaker, I will sometimes REFUSE to speak Spanish to many Hispanics that I know damn well should at least understand what the hell I’m saying. But when it comes to kids, it’s a different story all together.

In reference to Spanish classes in school, children are not obligated in any way, shape, or form to take Spanish (at least not in our school district) and if they choose not to, they are not “ostracized” by being sent to the library. What the hell else are we suppose to do? In my case, if I have one or two kids that don’t take Spanish, I allow them to visit the library, read silently, catch up on any classwork they haven’t finished, work on the computer, start on their homework, etc…

The reason Spanish in offered more than other language is because guess what? There are more Hispanics in the US then there are French, Italians, Germans, etc… so crazy us, in an effort to better prepare students for what they will most likely encounter in the real world, we offer Spanish starting in at the elementary level.

Oh, and have you picked up a newspaper lately and looked at the classifieds? Most jobs when asking for a bilingual applicant prefer for the second language to be Spanish. Thing 1 will have a lot more doors open for her because of her Spanish acquisition. It’s just a fact. Like it or not. Good for her and good for Kim for having encouraged her to do so!

I know this sounds like an angry e-mail, but its not! You guys are awesome but I just had to comment on the whole Spanish / English thing. So awesome are you both, that aside from teaching elementary school, I also teach undergraduate courses for education majors at the university and I have encouraged my students to listen to your podcasts for some laughs and insights on parents & children!! I encourage them to vote for you as well!!

Hey guys, have you ever considered home schooling?

I vote for a new rule: "No more male gay sex talk". Kim this means you.

I'm sad to admit that my wife has this Redbook issue and that I've read this article. (It was in the bathroom.) Ok, I know - Too Much Information.

I can't believe that Kim is so uptight about some girls in tight shirts. What's the big deal? Tanel wouldn't care if I got my hair cut at a topless place (which someone should totally invent).

Totally agree that we've become an overprotective society and you should let your kid play on the floor. Babies can practice rolling around the floor and can sometimes double as a vacuum. ;)

Hi Florian -

It's true about us hot people having more daughters. We actually talked about this waaaaay back in Episode 0018: Let's Talk about Sex. At about 7:45 into that episode, we expound on this politically incorrect truth.

I also read an article recently that blue-eyed people have more kids. Since I have really blue eyes, and I'm totally hot, I support science's assertion's 100%.

Hi Kim, Hi Sam,

did you know, that the more attractive a couple is, the higher its the likelihood for them having daughters (and not sons)... ?

Isn't that interesting?

Take Care!

I love your commitment!

I think I am beating you. My screenplay is 3 percent done and flying. I have drawn all the circles in my plot outline, and am merely a few characters, actions, events, and resolutions away from a story.

Chris H. clued us in to your show. Good stuff. Sam, we at SomaCow fully understand the pain and agony you bear under, the constant pressure of dealing with women that just do not pull their own weight. Podcasting with Strep Throat? WAH! I did three whole shows with a nose boil. Sack up, Kim.

School nurses are the second most useless individuals on the planet. They receive children with every ailment from skinned knee to tuberculosis; from ADHD to chicken pox, and on and on and on. Their panacea for all these medical maladies? Band Aid. Maybe some Hydrogen Peroxide, if no one is looking. They should just have a phone, with a post-it note stating, "Call your mom". Far more effective.

Dallas sounds like Bartertown. I am always amazed that people knowingly live in Texas. I just don't know how that happens.

Why are they feeding kids for math? Are they trying to grow fat engineers?

Taking smart kids' sundaes and giving them to the stupid children will teach the smarties a valuable lesson. The American Tax System is designed to punish winners. Better to learn early than to be all shocked when your kid earns their first million.

I like the way you guys do your blogs. The sometimes witty, sometimes informational timestamp bullets are a good reference during the listen. We're totally stealing it! As soon as we can find someone capable of listening to our show.

Well, I had to get GH3, too. I mean, RB only comes with one guitar, and I clearly needed two. I found the best way to drop hints is by going to the store with your wife, pointing at items, and saying, "Put that in the cart, plzkthx."

A-freakin-men Sam. Amen. I don't give a crap if I have to fix a WooglieBoogliewasit valve and I don't even know what the hell it is, how it is broken, what it does, or even where the hell in my house it is. As soon as the women folk starting sticking their freakin nose in how to fix something or what I should do then my penis just shrivels up and falls off. Nothing emasculates a man like having some nosy broad stick their nose in my DNA programmed God given right to swear, bang a few tools, before I figure out I need a professional to fix it. I KNOW I'm only going to fuck it up worse than it was but just shut the hell up and let me do it. It'll get fixed after I hurt myself twice, curse God, then finally call someone else to unfuck what I fucked up. In the meantime stay out of my way. Instead of telling me what I should do or should have done or how you were right all along then how about tell me how well I diagnosed the problem and I got it fixed. Do that and you just might get lucky.

Hi Kim, Hi Sam,

have you thought about vaccinating your girls against HPV (and so against cervical cancer)?

It is strongly recommended in the USA!

For information have a look at this page :

See you!

Love your show!

In episode 59 you asked about who went and downloaded all the whole bunch of old episodes. I am afraid that would be me.

My first chance listening to you was episode 51 - absolutely loved it. Played it the second time to my wife.

This is the best thing I have found that helps me cope with the terrible Washington DC commutes.
