The Call
Whenever you have kids, you always worry. You worry that they won’t be born okay, that they’ll have thirteen toes and you don’t believe the doctor until you personally check everything yourself. Every time they have a cough, you start thinking about SARS or bird flu. A scrape on the knee gets coated in antibacterial goop to ward off MRSA. A mosquito bite is probably the vector for West Nile. When they date, you think dark thoughts of VD and pregnancy, and you watch them every day, every second, for the early signs of something wrong, something bad in their lives.
Then, when you finally think you’re in the clear, you blink, you rest your eyes and drop your guard because hey, she’s 16, you’ve earned a little reprieve from the constant vigilance.
And the phone rings.
